Kristy’s South Melbourne family sanctuary

The Scandi makeover that brought an architecturally designed family terrace to life

When Kristy found FURNISHD. her South Melbourne terrace was in need of some serious styling to do justice to its incredible architectural design features, and to create the perfect base for the laidback lifestyle of her and her family.

Here’s how FURNISHD.’s Kirsty Ristevski stepped in and worked her magic to give this family a home with the wow factor they deserved.

This fabulous South Melbourne terrace is home to Kristy and her husband, along with their two kids, and their beloved cat. They like to entertain occasionally, but generally their home is their escape hatch – a quiet retreat from urban life.

Customer's BRIEF

Kristy and her husband are the proud owners of a beautifully renovated double-story Victorian terrace. The architectural makeover their home has been given blends its stunning period features with bold industrial elements, creating something truly breathtaking and highly functional for family life.

Kristy wanted the interior styling to match the home, but found that between her busy career and full family life, she just didn’t have the time to source and shop for the perfect pieces – especially without knowing for sure how everything would look once it was in the space.

She wanted a home she could be proud to entertain in, but that would also become the perfect sanctuary for her family to relax in. The design had to have some wow factor, but also be practical for family life and work with the architectural elements of their home.

designer’s note

When I received Kristy’s brief, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this incredible project. My goal was to create a comfortable, practical and stylish sanctuary for Kristy’s family to come home to, and to share with their friends and family.

I broke the project down into its key spaces, and created a design folio to visually share my ideas with Kristy, keeping her style and colour preferences top of mind throughout the process.

I provided Kristy with a shopping list of recommended items that fell within her budget of $25,000, and included all of the furniture, homewares, art, décor and plants needed to complete the project.

Design Folio

Entry

My aim was to create a calming space for Kristy and her family to pass through whenever they entered or left their home, by using functional furniture and decor to keep keys etc. organised, muted colours, and artwork that took inspiration from natural landscapes.

Downstairs living & dining space

My vision for the dining area included the introduction of a circular dining table to create better flow within the space, paired with plush, comfortable dining chairs to inject some wow-factor and provide the perfect contrast to the vertical greenery in the lightwell.

When it came to the living room, I knew King Living’s Zaza sofa in a stunning textural fabric would suit the brief perfectly. It’s luxuriously comfortable and practical for Kristy’s family, but also sophisticated in its design, and provides the perfect anchor for this integral part of the family’s home.  I also suggested original artwork by talented local artist, Clare Dubina, for the living room walls.

Upstairs landing & living

The landing at the top of the stairs deserved a little ‘wow’, so I suggested a natural timber bench seat upholstered with beautiful cobalt velvet, paired with a framed canvas by Australian artist, Kimmy Hogan.

For the upstairs living space, I proposed layered artwork (also by Kimmy Hogan) with complementary cushions and throws, and a gorgeous coffee table, perfect for Kristy and the family to put their feet up on at the end of the day!

Customer Feedback

“We liked Kirsty’s ideas and we felt confident spending the money knowing it would all go together in the end. The 2D renders really helped us to visualise how our home would look styled with Kirsty’s recommended pieces, and the brands she chose were high-quality and fitted with our budget.”

Shopping & Delivery

We kept Kristy updated on the order and delivery status by following up with suppliers as ETA dates approached.

We solved issues with delayed items by sourcing great alternatives for those pieces that Kristy was open to swapping. When pieces that Kristy wanted to keep as per Kirsty’s initial recommendation were delayed, we liaised with suppliers to make additional deliveries when the items became available, at no extra charge.

We helped Kristy exchange an item that had been damaged in transit (it happens sometimes unfortunately!) by dealing with the supplier on her behalf.

Customer Feedback

We have never engaged someone to help with our interiors before, but we knew we didn’t have time to shop and scout for everything ourselves!

FURNISHD. made sure the delivery and installation process was as easy as possible, and dealt with issues promptly and efficiently.”
